It's estimated that more than 600,000 people are homeless in the United States. Each year, homeless outreach organizations engage individuals living on the streets... in cars, abandoned buildings, train/bus stations, and other places not meant for human habitation.
Nearly one quarter of the homeless are children under the age of 18, ten percent are between 18 and 24, and 67 percent are 25 years or older. An increasing number, estimated at 1 in 30, of the homeless are children and students.
In colder climates, like the Northeastern United States, the winter months can be especially difficult for the homeless, living in and out of overcrowded shelters or on the freezing cold streets.
In warmer climates, like Southern California, the homeless population remains at record highs. The city of Los Angeles and LA county have the most chronically homeless people in the country.
There are various causes of homelessness and it often co-exists with substance addiction and mental illness. Most homeless adults and youth have been abandoned by their families and friends.
YOU CAN HELP! The annual Homeless For The Holidays 5k Run / 2.5k Walk is the largest annual fundraiser for the Pennies From Kevan Foundation, a 501(c)3 charitable foundation that provides funds to agencies that feed, clothe and shelter homeless and extremely low income adults, children and families.
Your participation in the Homeless For The Holidays 5k Run / 2.5k Walk will make a difference in the lives of adults and children you'll likely never see or meet. But they are out there today and every day, struggling to feed, clothe and shelter themselves and their families.
